Hello everyone,


As the Artistic Director of the 5th Changsha International Guitar Festival, I want to welcome you to this years festival, which will take place from July 19th to July 23rd 2016 in the historic city of Changsha in China. 

The theme for this years festival is to celebrate the centenary years of two great composers : Ginastera and Granados.  This is being realised by selecting pieces by these composers as the set pieces in the competition.

The festival will include five full days of activity including :
- concerts from leading international artists
- masterclasses given by the international artists
- a classical guitar competition, with generous prizes for four different age ranges. The first prize in the open competition is US$10,000, a six-concert tour in China in 2017, and a handmade classical guitar. 
- a composition competition for guitar, with a US$1,000 first prize and the winning piece to be published internationally by Doberman.  The winning piece will will also be performed at the 2017 Changsha International Guitar Festival.  The judge for the first round is the multi-award winning composer, and winner of the 2016 composition competition, Mr. Nejc Kuhar and the judge for the final round is Dr. Kenneth Kwan.

You can take a few extra days to explore the historical city of Changsha, the capital of Hunan province.  Changsha is easily accessible from the from the international airport hubs of Shanghai or Guangzhou, by regular one hour flights.  Foreigners who attend the festival from overseas will be met at Changsha airport and accompanied to the venue by an English speaking host. You are all  welcome to this historic part of China !

.:  Travelling and staying in Changsha

For people attending from overseas, Changsha is easy to travel to. You can arrive in China at one of the big international air terminals such as Shanghai or Guangzhou.  There are regular flights from those to Changsha, which take around an hour.

You will be met at Changsha airport by English speaking Festival staff and accompanied to the venue / accomodation. 

The festival recommends that you stay in the festival hotel, where festival volunteers will be on hand to provide help and assistance to foreign guests. The festival can help you book accomodation at this hotel. You are of course free to make your own arrangements for accomodation.  Hotel prices in China are typically much cheaper than in the West.

1st Prize:10,000 US dollars cash, six concert tour in China in 2017, one classical guitar worth, 6,500 US dollars,certificate

2nd Prize:5,000 US dollars cash, one classical guitar worth, 3,500 US dollars, certificate

3rd Prize:3,000 US dollars cash, one guitar worth, 1,600 US dollars, certificate

4th /5th /6th: 500 US dollars cash, certificate

Note: The champion of the open group will hold a solo concert tour in 2017 in six Chinese cities, with the full support of the organizing committee of International Guitar Festival Changsha China. All the certificates in the open group will be signed by judges.

.:  Guitar competition rules

1. Open Group
PRELIMINARY ROUND:

Each candidate must perform the following pieces and they may be performed in any order:
- Set Piece: One piece from baroque period.
- Free Choice:One or more pieces by different composers from periods other than the baroque.

The total performance time must not exceed fifteen (15) minutes.

FINAL ROUND:

- Set Piece: Sonata OP.47 by Alberto Ginastera.
- Free Choice: One or more pieces.

All the pieces in the final round may not be from the same composer, but the pieces can be from the same composer in the preliminary round.

Material from the Preliminary Round may NOT be repeated in the Final Round.

The total performance time must be between twenty-five (25) to thirty (30) minutes.

Requirements: No limits in age and nationality. The contestants should provide the music score of your repertoire when registering.


2. Youth group
PRELIMINARY ROUND:

Each candidate must perform the following pieces and they may be performed in any order:

- Set Piece:One piece from Granados: Danzas Espanolas OP.37, any version. The judges will refer to the original piano score for adjudication purposes.
- Free Choice:One or more pieces from different composers.

The total performance time must not exceed fifteen(15) minutes.

FINAL ROUND:

- one or more free choice pieces each by different composers; 

Pieces can be from the same composers in the preliminary round.

Material from the Preliminary Round may NOT be repeated in the Final Round.

The total performance time must not to exceed fifteen (15) minutes.

Requirements: 14-20 years old; born on July 19 1996-July 18 2002; no limit in nationality.


3. Juvenile group
PRELIMINARY ROUND:

Each candidate must perform the following pieces and they may be performed in any order:

- Set Piece:One piece original works for guitar from Villa Lobos.

- Free Choice:One or more pieces from different composers.

The total performance time must not exceed eight(8) minutes.

FINAL ROUND:

- one or more free choice pieces from different composers

The pieces can be from the same composer in the preliminary round.

Material from the Preliminary Round may NOT be repeated in the Final Round.

The total performance time must not exceed twelve (12) minutes.

Requirements: 11-14 years old; born on July 19, 2002-July 18, 2005; no limit in nationality.


4. Children group A\B
PRELIMINARY ROUND:

Each candidate must perform the following pieces and they may be performed in any order:

- Set Piece:refer to the Royal Conservatory music development program.The total performance time must not exceed eight (8) minutes. Group A:Jeffrey McFadden:Middle night in Sevilla Group B:Moonlight by Stepan Rak

- One or more free choice pieces

The total performance time must not to exceed eight (8) minutes.

FINAL ROUND:

- All finalists are required to perform a minimum of two (2) works of contrasting styles (by different composers) not to exceed a total of ten (10) minutes.

Requirements:

- Group A: 9-11 years old; born on July 19, 2005-July 18, 2007; no limit in nationality.

- Group B: under 9 years old; born on or after July 19, 2007; no limit in nationality


Notes for all competitors:

All finalists of Competition will have a free hotel room for the day of final round.

All the past 1st prize winners of open group are not entitled to participate in the competition this year.

All prizes are pre-tax.

All the finalists from different groups should provide the music score of your optional repertoire before the finals.
